ElevateMeD Awards 2022 Breaking Barriers Award to Dr. Wayne Franklin

Scottsdale, Arizona- Scottsdale-based nonprofit organization ElevateMeD is proud to announce its second Breaking Barriers Award recipient, Dr. Wayne Franklin. The ElevateMeD Breaking Barriers Award was established to recognize physician leaders whose work addressing healthcare disparities is positively and innovatively impacting diversity within medicine. The organization will present the award at its signature fundraising event Explosion of a Dream at the Scott Resort and Spa on Saturday, September 24, 2022.

About The Breaking Barriers Award

Annually, the ElevateMeD ElevateMeD Board of Directors votes upon an outstanding individual to receive this honor. Established in 2019, the organization determined it wanted to give recognition to community advocates who are also working tirelessly towards improving healthcare for all. The organization presented its first Breaking Barriers Award to Dr. Dale Okorodudu of the multi-platform Black Men In White Coats.

Dr. Franklin’s career and legacy has inspired us all at ElevateMeD,” shares Dr. Alyx Porter Umphrey, Founder and Executive Director of ElevateMeD. “In addition to his exceptional clinical acumen, he is a true advocate for diversity in medicine. His incredible leadership at Phoenix Children’s and UA Phoenix is blazing a path for the next generation to lead with passion and integrity.

About Dr. Wayne Franklin

Dr. Wayne Franklin is a board-certified Cardiologist with a specialty in pediatrics and adult cardiology. A second-generation physician with over 20 years of practice, Dr. Franklin joined Phoenix Children’s to lead as Co-Director of the Center for Heart Care, where he also serves as the Division Chief of Cardiology and Associate Director of Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program. In 2020, he led the Underrepresented in Medicine (URM) Scholarship effort, raising over $50,000 for talented students at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Most recently, Dr. Franklin was presented as the Robinson Family Endowed Chair, a distinguished honor that makes him the first African American endowed chair at Phoenix Children’s.

This year’s Explosion of a Dream weekend features the annual Scholars Summit, where diverse medical student leaders who have received scholarships and support from ElevateMeD, experience a weekend full of workshops tailored toward their professional development to enhance the programming throughout the academic year. Dr. Franklin will join the Scholars Summit and share his inspiring career with the ElevateMeD Scholars as a guest speaker. The formal award presentation will take place at Explosion of Dream at The Scott Resort & Spa. In-person and virtual ticket options are available for the general public to attend.
