Meet Chioma Aneke

Chioma Aneke is a future doctor who understand the importance of compassion, empathy, cultural competency and advocacy. She shares just how early experiences shaped her commitment to advancing health care equity.

• Hometown: Washington D.C.

• Medical Education: The Ohio State University

• Undergraduate Education: The George Washington University in Psychology

• Current Career Plan: Complete a Family Medicine residency providing care to underserved communities, while continuing to mentor pre-med and medical students. I aim to open a primary care clinic in my home country of Nigeria and contribute to multiple humanitarian and global health relief efforts throughout my career.

• Specialty Interest: Family Medicine

• I am most proud of my resilience in medicine, inspired by my upbringing and heritage as the daughter of first-generation Nigerian immigrants from the Igbo tribe. With no physicians in my family, my path into medicine was shaped by my mother, a nurse, and by helping care for my younger brother with special needs, which deepened my commitment to serving immigrant and underserved communities. Later on, the sudden loss of my father ultimately became a source of strength and direction. I am proud that I continued to persevere through adversities in my gap years before medical school and throughout medical school to become the first in my family to become a physician.

• You might be surprised to know that I have played chess since the 6th grade and used to perform spoken word poetry competitively! I’ve also completed medical brigades in Honduras and Ecuador, with Africa next!

• ElevateMeD is… an opportunity for people from various backgrounds and journeys in medicine to come together and be holistically supported in becoming the best possible future residents and, ultimately, physicians.
