From ElevateMeD Scholar to Johns Hopkins physician leader, Dr. Evans Osuji is advancing cardiovascular care, mentoring future physicians, and improving health outcomes in communities facing barriers to care. Now an ElevateMeD alumnus, he continues to give back as a mentor, served as the keynote speaker at Ignite D.C. 2025, and returned in 2026 to introduce keynote speaker Dr. Shane Scott.

Message from Evans Osuji, MD
“Since becoming an ElevateMeD Scholar, I have grown from a medical student at The Ohio State University into a senior internal medicine resident at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where I am now preparing to pursue fellowship training in cardiovascular disease.
During residency, I have taken on leadership roles focused on improving the experience of both patients and trainees. Through our Residency Steering Committee, I have contributed to resident mentorship, recruitment, and program development. I have also remained committed to mentoring students who may not always see themselves represented in medicine and helping them navigate their own paths toward becoming physicians.
One of my proudest recent milestones has been helping lead Nourish My Heart Baltimore, an initiative supported by the American College of Cardiology Foundation. The program addresses food insecurity and nutrition education among patients recovering from hospitalization for heart failure. This work has given me the opportunity to translate advocacy into a practical intervention that supports patients beyond the hospital walls.
I have also continued to advance scholarship in sports cardiology, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiovascular health equity, and cardio-oncology. My recent work has included national presentations, peer-reviewed publications, an American College of Cardiology Expert Analysis, and a $40,000 grant supporting our MOVE-HCM research.
