ElevateMeD Scholar: Isaiah Hughes

Meet Isaiah Hughes

ElevateMeD Scholar 2025-26

Isaiah Hughes shares how growing up in an underserved community with deep-rooted mistrust toward the healthcare system inspires his pursuits in medicine. He plans to pay it forward by mentoring underserved students and provide patient trust and representation.

  • Hometown: Willingboro, New Jersey

  • Medical Education: Cooper Medical School of Rowan University

  • Undergraduate Education: Rowan University in Biological Science

  • Current Career Plan: Be an orthopaedic surgeon who is not only a compassionate physician, but also active in my community by way of creating and fostering initiatives such as health fairs, mentoring, and education.

  • Specialty Interest: Orthopedic Surgery

  • I am most proud of the impact I have made on people's lives. Whether that is my patients and making sure they feel heard and cared for as if they are my own family, or the young students I have been able to mentor and meet who I consistently strive and push for them to accomplish their goals. Witnessing their growth and success, just as seeing my patients feel supported and empowered in their care, reinforces my passion for service and reminds me why I chose this path.

  • You might be surprised to know that I slept the night in a cave while hiking in Utah.

  • ElevateMeD is… a program dedicated to helping support minority physicians in training by giving them the tools to succeed. By supporting medical students financially, as well as preparing them to be leaders in their communities, they empower future physicians to thrive academically, serve with cultural humility, and become advocates for health equity. Through mentorship, leadership development, and reducing financial barriers, they cultivate a diverse workforce equipped to address disparities and inspire the next generation.
