ElevateMeD Announcements and Updates

Recap: Ignite Atlanta 2022 Scholarship Event

New City. New Supporters. Same Mission.

Our first Ignite Atlanta was a celebration of the future of medicine! As the first event of our multi-city fundraising efforts, this event allowed us an opportunity to connect deeply with our Atlanta network, the second-largest hub of donors and supporters and introduce ElevateMeD to new supporters who also believe in our mission. More than 140 medical students, physicians, and professionals joined us on May 12, 2022, against the backdrop of Downtown Atlanta set at Ventanas.

As guests arrived for our cocktail hour, they were greeted with live music by harpist Afiya Cave of Drew Charter Schools and were invited to engage in robust conversations with our Scholars and begin participating in the silent auction and raffle. Once seated, a dinner was served just before our program took place. The mission of the evening was to share the vision of what it means to elevate medicine, and due to the incredible success of this event, we believe we achieved this goal.

The Ignite Atlanta event was made complete as we:

  • Exceeded our fundraising goal by raising over $100,000 with 140+ guests in attendance

  • Received opening remarks from Executive Director and Founder Dr. Alyx Porter Umphrey as she shared the her experiences from three years prior while attending Spelman reunion weekend

  • Ashley Harriot (Emory ‘24), Arryx Rice (Emory ‘23), and Chakaris Neal (Morehouse ‘23) were each presented with a $10,000 check for their tuition based scholarships, presented by ElevateMeD Treasurer Patrick Brooks and ElevateMeD Co-Founder Dr. Gregory Umphrey

  • Acknowledged the graduation of ElevateMeD Scholar-turned-Doctor Dr. Camara Sharperson, Emory University Class of 2022, who will be attending a residency at the University of California San Francisco for Anesthesiology

  • Listened in as Dr. Edjah Nduom, neurosurgeon from Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University provided a powerful message about the importance of health equity and the national need for organizations such as ElevateMeD

  • Received a keynote address by Dr. Christian Freeman Law, a member of the inaugural cohort of Scholars, chronicling her challenging journey to medicine and the profound impact of the ElevateMeD Scholars Program in her final year of medical school

  • Shared in the excitement of a robust live auction with event host and auctioneer Subyn Novelle
