ElevateMeD Founder

Dr. Alyx Porter Umphrey is a highly regarded physician leader and philanthropist with a passion for equity, diversity, and inclusion. Through her leadership, she has served on the boards of publicly traded companies and nonprofit organizations across the country and serves as a neuro-oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. 

Eager to give back to the next generation of physician leaders, she founded ElevateMeD alongside her husband to elevate medicine to an ideal where the physician workforce represents the communities served. Since its founding in 2019, the nonprofit organization has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships and support to deserving medical students from underrepresented backgrounds across the country. She leads the organization as its Executive Director. 

A lifelong learner completed her Neurology Residency and Neuro-Oncology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education and received her MD from Temple University School of Medicine, and her BA from Spelman College. One of her greatest contributions to medicine includes co-authorship of the bestselling resource for patients and families coping with brain tumors, Navigating Life With a Brain Tumor.  Published by Oxford Press in 2013, this book is one of the few tools available for empowering patients and their loved ones.  The second edition is currently in process.   

Dr. Porter is a member of the Executive Operative Team at Mayo Clinic in Arizona where she serves as the Chair of the Outpatient Practice.  She holds active membership with the American Academy of Neurology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society for Neuro- Oncology and the National Medical Association. Dr. Porter is a founding member of Women in Neuro-Oncology, an organization that is responsible for providing substantive opportunities for networking, career enhancement, research, and innovations for female neuro-oncologists through the Society of NeuroOncology. Dr. Porter Umphrey is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Dr. Porter has been happily married to Dr. Gregory Umphrey for over 15 years. Together, they are the proud parents of Rylan, Makena, and their Golden Retriever, Sunset.
