Johanny Lopez Dominguez is a third-year dermatology resident at Stanford Dermatology, currently serving as Chief Resident. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and her Master’s in the Science of Health Care Delivery at Arizona State University. At Mayo, she founded the Latino Medical Student Association, a group dedicated to raising awareness of Latino health issues and advocating for increased diversity in medicine.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Johanny moved to the United States at the age of 11. Raised by a single mother alongside her sister in a low-resource community, she received a scholarship to attend Georgetown University, which enabled her to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. The opportunities she has been given fuel her passion for helping other students succeed academically and for ensuring underserved communities have access to healthcare. Medicine, to her, is the perfect bridge between her inquisitive nature and her desire to support communities in need.

Johanny envisions a career focused on improving healthcare access for low-income and immigrant communities. During her dermatology training, she is honing both medical and procedural skills that will enable her to provide unique solutions for conditions affecting communities of color. She is particularly focused on deroofing procedures to offer surgical options for patients with hidradenitis suppurativa with lesions resistant to medical management. She is also seeking to acquire skills in melanocyte transplants, which will help patients with refractory vitiligo lesions in sensitive, stigmatizing areas, particularly those with darker complexions. Additionally, she is applying for a Mohs micrographic surgery fellowship to enhance her surgical expertise and expand her ability to offer more management options for cutaneous tumors.

Johanny is deeply committed to increasing diversity and representation in medicine. Johanny is passionate about ElevateMeD because, in addition to offering essential financial support, it empowers students with the skills to become leaders in medicine. She believes this program is instrumental in increasing representation and improving care for all.
