Diverse representation in medical school graduates has failed to increase at the same rate as the growth in diversity of the US population. A continued limitation of representation within the physician workforce leads to worse care for underrepresented populations contributing to the burden of health disparities in the United States. Studies show improved patient outcomes and patient satisfaction when physicians recognize the cultural nuances, traditions, and their implications in the populations they serve. Increasing physician workforce diversity is an imperative component to closing the gap of health disparities.
