Graduation rates in medical schools have not kept pace with the changing demographics of the United States. When the physician workforce does not reflect the communities it serves, patients often experience lower quality of care, particularly in populations that have historically faced barriers to equitable healthcare access. Research consistently shows that patient outcomes and satisfaction improve when physicians understand the cultural context, lived experiences, and communication needs of the individuals they treat. Broadening access to medical education and cultivating physicians who are equipped to serve all communities is essential to closing persistent gaps in health outcomes.
