Dr. Shah is passionate about medical education and helping Dr. Shah graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Illinois Chicago and then geriatric medicine and clinician-educator fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He spent several years at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas (2007-2014) where he co-led the Southwestern Aging and Geriatrics Education (SAGE) program.

After joining Mayo Clinic in 2014, he was involved in the founding and startup of the Arizona campus of the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. He has served as Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, member of the Admissions Operations Committee, and then as Associate Dean of Student Affairs until June 2024. He currently co-leads and teaches the longitudinal geriatrics curriculum at Mayo Clinic, called “Senior Sages.” He helps aspiring students from underrepresented in medicine backgrounds with personal statements and interviewing preparation as part of several program at Mayo Clinic. In recognition of his efforts in medical education, he received the Mayo Clinic Dean’s Recognition Award in 2023. He was also selected for the Mayo Clinic Arizona Department of Internal Medicine Physician of the Year Award in 2026.

Nationally, he is the senior director and editor-in-chief of the American Geriatrics Society/Aquifer national case-based curriculum for geriatrics education for MD, DO, NP, and PA students, which has >500,000 case completions to date. He was awarded the American Geriatrics Society’s 2018 Outstanding Mid-Career Clinician Educator of the Year Award in recognition of these efforts.
