Despite the fact that African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American populations make up nearly a third of the US population, as of 2016 they comprised only 17% of faculty at academic medical centers.

Compounding this problem is the fact that physicians in these underrepresented groups have fewer publications, are less likely to be promoted to professor, and less likely to be retained at academic medical centers.

I am thankful that there have been key individuals at important phases of my education and career to provide the mentorship I needed to flourish in this environment. Unfortunately, the data shows that many of my Latino colleagues are not as fortunate.

I am proud to be a part of ElevateMeD because I believe wholeheartedly in the mission to foster diversity in medicine. You can help by providing your mentorship, guidance and support and can also help bridge the gap in financial disparities with your donations.

Even the smallest of efforts can have profound downstream effects!

Help us prioritize physician workforce diversity.
