Sophia Ederaine is a second year medical student at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. She is passionate about increasing diversity in medicine. While at Mayo she founded the school’s Student National Medical Association chapter. She is an avid advocate for recruiting underrepresented medical students and is committed to mentoring other students. She looks forward to a career in medicine where she can actively increase students and educators from minority backgrounds in medical school. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Sophia Ederaine came to the United States with her family at the age of eight. She grew up in Moreno Valley, California were she played basketball with her twin sister and older brother all the way up to high school. She received a scholarship to play basketball at the University of San Diego were she completed a degree in Psychology with a minor in Chemistry. Before starting medical school Sophia also played basketball at the professional level in Germany. In her career, Sophia hopes to increase medical knowledge regarding diseases and how they affect minorities differently. Specifically, when it comes to how pathologies look and present differently in African, African American and Black populations.
